From Luka Doncic to Tarik Skubal and Myles Garrett: LA Gets Away Again

The sports capital of the country has been a long debated question between a few cities: Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, you name them. Nevertheless, with consecutive controversial acquisitions, Los Angeles has emerged as the new sports capital. The city’s sports teams have established a new truth: They get what they want, and they get away with it.

The most controversial trades, from Doncic to Skubal, are as follows. There have definitely been other lopsided trades, such as the Mookie Betts trade, but the following are recent shockers that have re-shaped the sports industry:

Luka Doncic Trade

Looking back, the trade between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks has been among the most lopsided in sports history. Luka Doncic, who brought the Mavericks their first finals appearance in over a decade, was immediately traded for Anthony Davis in February 2025. The details are as follows:

  • Los Angeles Lakers received: Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris.
Dallas Mavericks received: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick.
Utah Jazz received: Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-round pick.

We’ve already covered the trade before: The Lakers won big and stole the Slovenian superstar from the Mavericks. Though most fans were immediately shocked, the aftermath of the trade seems to be getting worse. This is one of the most prominent lopsided trades favoring an Los Angeles sports franchise in recent years. The Lakers have set themselves up for a promising future, while the Mavericks have hit the reset button.

Myles Garrett Trade

While we don’t typically cover as much NFL content, this trade is another great example of how Los Angeles keeps getting away with the biggest names in sports. The Rams, coming off an exciting season in which Matthew Stafford won his first MVP at the age of 37 and led the league in passing yards, decided it was not enough and went after the biggest name on the market. The details are as follows:

  • Player Sent to LA: Myles Garrett (two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year)
Player Sent to Cleveland: Jared Verse (young ascending pass rusher)
    Draft Capital to Cleveland: 2027 first-round pick, 2028 second-round pick, 2029 third-round pick

Prior to the trade, Myles Garrett had just posted the most dominant defensive season in recent NFL history. Garrett shattered the single-season sack record with 23 and won defensive player of the year. The trade was a shocker, but it re-established the dominance of Los Angeles in the sports industry. With the best defensive player in the league, the Rams have set themselves up for another contending season. And with that, another big name comes to LA.

Tarik Skubal Trade

While the first two trades seemed shocking to most fans, the Dodgers’ trade for Skubal did not surprise many fans in the same way. The Tigers’ plans to sell Skubal was expected, and Los Angeles had always been seen as the top destination. However, the details of the trade was another reminder of Los Angeles getting away with the biggest names in sports, effortlessly. The details are as follows:

  • To Detroit Tigers: Outfielder Zyhir Hope (No. 5 Dodgers prospect), right-handed pitcher River Ryan (No. 7 Dodgers prospect), and right-handed pitcher Brady Smith.
To Los Angeles Dodgers: Left-handed starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.

The Dodgers have already been blamed for many controversial acquisitions and is already on their way to being the favorites to 3-peat. From the lopsided trade for Mookie Betts, to signing Freddie Freeman from the Braves, to signing Shohei Ohtani, and most recently Edwin Diaz and Kyle Tucker, we thought we’ve seen it all.

To be fair, any team could have offered the package the Dodgers offered, but no team was willing to compete, which directly resulted in this devastation for many fans. The depth of the Dodger’s farm system is definitely the major driver behind the trade, and there is no doubt the Dodgers are good at developing young talents. The trade does not fully have to do with money-spending. However, it is also because the Dodgers can spend to acquire big name outfielders that they can afford to trade outfield prospects they will never need, unlike small-market teams such as the Brewers or Rays. Overall, the trade is another example of Los Angeles acquiring the biggest names in sports, and getting away with it.
